Dead of Winter by Teagan Riordain Geneviene

I am really enjoying Dead of Winter by Teagan Riordain Geneviene and Journey’s 6 and 7 are simply thrilling. Keep them coming, Teagan.
Journey 10, Pergesca is now available and you can read about it here: https://teagansbooks.com/2021/10/13/announcing-dead-of-winter-journey-10-pergesca/
Journey 6, The Fluting Fell

My review
Journey 6 opens with Haldis realising that Arawn has somehow overcome the binding and managed to cross over from the Realm of the Dead. The reality that is Arawn becomes clearer still as this journey progresses and he attempts to kidnap Boabhan. Fortunately, his attack is unsuccessful but Boabhan is left injured and weak. Boabhan is unable to put up a barrier to stop Emlyn from penetrating her dreams and Emlyn is subjected to a realistic reperformance of a traumatic event in Boabhan’s life.
The Deae Matres decide to seek shelter in an old and seemingly empty estate which was abandoned by its owner when her entire family died during the Fever Days. The estate proves to not be as abandoned as the party thought and Emlyn, with her gift of seeing spirits, meets a ghost who she is able to help and another who is able to help her with some vital information and an important indicator of the path the group must take.
Throughout this journey, Emlyn continues to learn from the Deae Matres and learn more about their pasts and experiences, many of which feed into their present circumstances and help determine the way forward.
As always there is rich language and beautiful descriptions like “A dream latched onto her and pulled her into a deep sleep.”
This journey ends on quite a cliff hanger which certainly left me eager to move onto Journey 7.

Journey 7, Revenant Pass

My review
Oh my, this journey starts with such a bang. Haldis remembers how she came to be all alone, bound to a beautiful and magical, but excruciatingly lonely, building. The flaws that marred the society of the Deae Matres come out and we see various characters presented as they were at the height of their power. No structure administered by human being can ever be perfect, but the society does manage to save that which is most important to them, even if the outcome isn’t exactly as hoped and expected.
Arawn’s status as a nightwalker becomes clearer and his intentions towards the Deae Matres is revealed.
Through the world of Dreams Emlyn enters a different part of the Realm of the Dead and discovers who the young man with the silver hair is. She learns a bit of his backstory and motivations. His limitations are clearly stated, but he does offer to try and help Emlyn and the other travelers out of their difficult situation trapped in the World of the Dead. He is not able to guarantee success and Emlyn is sent back to her friends with a message for them to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
A little more is revealed about Boabhan’s strengths and weakness as well as Emlyn’s own concerns for her future. As circumstances and situations unravel, Emlyn continues to learn who she can count on the most within the group.
This is one of the most exciting journeys in the series to date, and the story moves along at a rapid rate.

She really does, Priscilla. I gave it a lot of thought before I went forward with using names from the countries whose geography and/or mythology (loosely) inspired the places in Dead of Winter. All that thought because I realized many of them would be hard to pronounce. Robbie does very well with them.
I’m delighted that you are enjoying the Journeys too. Hugs on the wing!

Excellent review and reading. Teagan writes faster than I can read but eventually I will read this series.

I’m over the moon with Robbie’s reviews, Darlene. I actually wrote this ten years ago — and it took over two years. Although I admit the editing and slight rewrite involved in making it suitable for a series is a full time job.
Stay safe and well. Hugs on the wing!

She is prolific, Darlene. I am finding reading a serialised version of this story great fun. The journeys are long enough to be interesting and move the story along, but short enough to read in a day or two so it’s less intimidating that a thick book.

Thanks very much, Chris. I let the epic sit on my “shelves” for a decade before I decided to publish it. There were several reasons, the chief one is explained in the preface of the first “Journey.” When I decided it was time to publish, the story was so big that I elected to rework it into novelette sized monthly issues. It’s nearing the end now, but all the early ones will stay out there, available.

That’s one thing I love about people being able to read the Journeys at their own pace, Olga. When they discuss something, it can also be a refresher to others reading later episodes.
Heartfelt thanks for your encouragement and your excellent reviews. Hugs on the wing!

Awesome review, Robbie. And I enjoyed your reading of a journey excerpt. The story at the half way mark has me more hooked than ever. I can see now how audio books might be enjoyable too. More time to visualize the story rather than concentrating on reading words. Even though I love printed books. 📚🎶 Christine
