Watercolour city

new-to-me city

shimmering and dancing

under its mantle

of soft cloud and rain

droplets run

water condenses

on taxi window

excitement thrums

to the gentle rhythm

of pattering ran

outside colours

mix and run

on the filmed canvas

of the busy street

mystery and delight

captured in

swirls and swishes

of patternless blurs

on which golden splashes

of enchanting light

beckon comfortingly

  1. Roberta, this is absolutely exquisite! I especially admire; “outside colours mix and run on the filmed canvas of the busy street.” ❤️❤️

      1. We love the Louvre. We were in Paris for three weeks in 2013 and went to the Louvre every day, except the day it was closed for President Macron’s visit.

  2. What a breathtaking poem! The line ‘outside colours mix and run on the filmed canvas of the busy street’ captures Grimshaw’s rainy, luminous style so perfectly. I completely agreed with sanaarizvi and Esther Chilton about the magic of those ‘swirls and swishes’ of light through the taxi window. Such a peaceful, atmospheric read, Roberta!

  3. I love the paintings of John Atkinson Grimshaw . I first saw one in Russell Cotes museum and gallery in Bournemouth, an evening autumn street scene. I had not seen the Leeds picture before, I love the rainy setting and your evocative response.

  4. Fab post, thank you Robbie! The poem and the painting are wonderful. The Louvre doors are majestic and that rose is a delight.
