Roberta Writes – Book promotion: This Is How We Eat anthology collated by Yvette Prior

My contribution to This Is How We Eat reflects on over exercise and a restricted diet in pursuit of the idealised body and perceived good health. I’m grateful to be part of this anthology alongside seventeen thoughtful writers.

This Is How We Eat (2026) brings together 17 authors who explore how food shapes memory, identity, emotion, culture, and connection. More than a collection of food stories, the book considers how eating influences community, belief, and becoming. It invites readers to reflect on their own tables — the meals that formed them, the flavors that anchored them, the rituals that sustained them — and offers a virtual slice of cake and a place at a longer table.

This Is How We Eat: Stories about Food, Culture, and Connection gathers seventeen diverse voices in an anthology that blends memoir, fiction, and poetic reflection. What began as an open invitation to explore “how we eat” unfolded into a deeply personal collection grounded in episodic memory and lived experience.

Within these pages, readers will encounter stories of migration and hospitality, body image and intuitive eating, gardening with grandchildren, solo dumpling dinners, budgeting with food, faith expressed through meals, and everyday rituals that shaped identity. Two layered fiction chapters provide a strong narrative close, reminding us that food can connect strangers, calm the body, and carry emotional depth.

While vivid food descriptions and a handful of recipes appear throughout, this is not simply a book about food. It is an exploration of human experience, belonging, culture, and the relationships formed away from and around the table. The anthology invites readers to reflect on their own tables — the choices they have made, the flavors that anchored their meals, and the connections that continue to shape who they are.

      1. You’re welcome. That same professor also did two Great Courses series, respectively on writing essays and American short stories. If you’re interested, her name’s Jennifer Cognard-Black.

  1. My wife and I are on a very early 40th anniversary trip (Our actual anniversary isn’t until August, but we’re trying to beat the heat.) I’ve read the first nine chapters of the book when we have a little downtime. I’ll likely get to your piect later today, Robbie.

      1. It was very powerful, Robbie. It reinforces the idea that mean or snarky comments can affect our self-image, leading to habits that may not always be healthy for us. I loved learning that becoming a mother flipped the script for you.

  2. What a great idea – a book about food, how we eat, and how all that influences our life. I can’t wait to read it. And I’m thinking this would be a great prompt in my writing classes – how do YOU eat? I think we all have such a strange relationship to food – maybe women more than men.

    1. I agree that many women have a weird relationship with food and their bodies. In Western countries and Japan, there is huge cultural pressure for women to be thin. Anorexic models are held up as examples of female beauty. I know several women who’ve had eating disorders. I was obsessed with exercise which is a bit different and I do change my obsessions, currently it’s painting, but over exercise is linked to body image and control.

      1. I recently watched the Any Winehouse documentary and her eating disorder (bulimia) was another factor that likely led to her early death. Many things played a part, but that malnourished factor was a huge part of it.

  3. I think this anthology is unusual and interesting as to how food influences us thoughtout our lives in so many ways…I rarely drink coffee not because I don’t like it just because I prefer other drinks that are beneficial for my gut…x

        1. Robbie and Carol, cheers to tea!

and Carol – why am I not surprised that you make your own kombucha – ? and one thing I did sneak into my A to Z (in the e for enzymes) was how here in the states, not all kombucha is the same quality – and so the only brand we drink is GT’s – for the enzymes and other helpful stuff in that wonderful booch!

          1. I make my own for two reasons , one as you know Yvette is that all kombucha isn’t the same quality and the fizzy is chemically made …the second is I can make 26 bottles for the cost of buying 1 bottle…no calculator required …Oh and 3 it truly is as easy to make as a cup of chai xxx

  4. This sounds an intriguing book.. Humans are omnivorous, whatever diets people follow there is no disputing the fact that the human race can eat just about anything, no wonder we have such a variety of meals and eating traditions.

I have always enjoyed food and meals at home and out. Having chemotherapy also made me realise just what a comfort food is and how it structures our day. Not eating or everything tasting awful makes life a bit grim.

      1. I knew exactly what you are saying! I’m doing the same with Story Chat. I made a Table of Contents last night for my master page. I finally finished that. She inspired each step along the way for me.

          1. Fortunately, it’s not a competition. We work together to create books that will inspire, educate, and entertain. We learn and grow from each other.

  6. I am very impressed with the quality of Yvette’s edition of How We Eat. I have also contributed to this edition, under a pen name, and have thoroughly enjoyed all the stories. The illustrations and images add another dimension to the stories which while all connecting around the theme of food, are so individual and diverse. Highly recommended.
