Roberta Writes – In Touch with Nature – rhinos and the poaching crisis

This month for my In Touch With Nature post I have considered the poaching of southern white rhinos. This post does not include any graphic details but is more a discussion about the reasons for the rapid decline in the white rhino population and steps being taken to resolve this crisis.

    What purpose does the horn serve to the Ryno?

    Obviously the punishment for this is not near as much as the gain of doing it.

    1. Hi Patty, the rhino uses its horn for a number of things such as defense, foraging and social interaction i.e. establishing dominance. They are actually an important tool for their survival in the bush. Removing them obviously changes their natural behaviour its better to be dehorned than dead, so …

  3. This made me think in a way of the Apple TV series The Wild Ones, in which three wildlife photographers go in search of critically endangered species and take part in trying to help keep them alive with their work. One episode was on rhinos (on the island of Java).
