Roberta Writes – Poetics: A view of one’s own and Thursday Doors #d’verse #poetry #photography

Dora’s Poetics challenge: What I’d like us to do is to write a poem that conjures a view (whether from our travels or everyday life, whether from desire or experience) that is colored by the emotion of the moment. You can join in here: https://dversepoets.com/2025/06/10/poetics-a-view-of-ones-own/

The Certainty of Life

There is a quiet peace

in our deep certainty

of the changing seasons

In our unwavering conviction

that the frigid winds of winter

will always give way

to the bright blooms of spring

that the ferocious heat of summer

will invariably succumb

to the cooler temperatures

and rich colours of autumn

There is a deep restfulness

in our unwavering confidence

that the sun will always rise

sometimes early

and sometimes late

sometimes obscured by cloud

but it comes up every day

in celebration of life

  1. A lovely poem full of hope because yes, the sun will always rise, even if we cannot see it. Beautiful photos. That lodge is gorgeous and the leopard! Wowzers. Lovely giraffe, too…

  2. Excellent poem, Robbie, and appreciated your lovely pictures. The one of the young leopard reminded me how I’ll never forget that “crunch” as I watched an adult dine on an antelope while perched in the tree. Thank you!

  3. Love the poem Robbie – when I see those luxury interiors which would not be out of place in a European capital, I wonder what the staff must think about them and the guests as compared to their own accommodation. Likewise when refugees first encounter a motorway service station in the UK – all the tales of pavements lined with gold must seem true to them…

    1. Thank you, Andrew. The staff live in the village which is nice in a rural South African way. They have large houses and all the services although their children go away for high school. On the whole, it is the immigrants from other African countries that live very poorly here.

  4. The reception entrance and the lounges look like a place you’d certainly feel welcome. I love the picture of the leopard in the tree. Just seeing him in a natural place makes me smile.

  5. Amazing photos, Robbie, especially the young leopard in the tree and the giraffe enjoying their natural environment, and a delightful poem. I think we need that ‘unwavering conviction that the frigid winds of winter will always give way to the bright blooms of spring’, it’s the only certainty humans have ever known, together with the knowledge that the sun will always rise.

      1. I love being in nature too, although the animals I see are nowhere near as wonderful, and sometimes dangerous, as those you see. Your paintings are photos bring me closer to them.

  6. Beautifully said, Robbie. The things that are certain in life do give us peace, joy, in the midst of uncertainty. How grateful I am that this is so!

  7. I love your poem so much, Robbie. In a world filled with uncertainties, it’s good to have something that is certain. Fantastic photos. The lodge looks amazing, as does the wildlife!

  8. love the poem about the metaphoric seasons, Robbie, and that gorgeous leopard in a tree at sunset photo; I hope you’re right about the sun: it is mid afternoon on this miserably wet, grey day and it has not arisen yet 😦
