Beyond the Window

Picture caption: The cloudscape beyond my window in the airplane

An alien and eerie landscape

Fills my limited view

Through the oval window

Of the double decker airplane

That drags me forward in time

An eight hour journey

Pulling long and thin

Into a fourteen hour time difference

Clouds, lumpy and thick,

Like cooked oats porridge

Not what I expected

They look smooth from ‘down below’

I look for the cloud men

Of Roald Dahl’s vivid imagination

In this surreal place and time

Anything is possible

Wispy men rolling chunks of cloud

Into soft, floaty snowflakes

To shower upon a sleeping world

Seems quite reasonable

The sun creeps highter

Throwing shards of golden joy

Turning the soft cloud peaks

Into mango ice-cream

And deepening the shadows

I’m trapped behind

Three layers of transparent stretched acrylic

I pull down the shutter

Close my eyes and

Step into the enticing white world

  1. I was transported, Robbie, through the open window you created so whimsically, so artistically. I loved so many choice imagery and phrases, especially

    “An eight hour journey

Pulling long and thin” (Wow, I know that enervated feeling!) and

    “Clouds, lumpy and thick,

    Like cooked oats porridge” and

“Wispy men rolling chunks of cloud” and the sun

    “Turning the soft cloud peaks

    Into mango ice-cream.”

A wondrous read, my friend, stepping out the window with you. I wish all our journeys were as magical.

      1. Quite a journey, and as a seasoned traveler, you still continue to open to its pleasures as much as used to its discomforts. If I could travel now, I would hope to be able to do as well. 🙂

  2. Excellent description of the clouds seen from the airplane window, Robbie. I only flew on a double decker airplane once. The plane from Hong Kong to California was full. My daughter and I got bumped to the first class on the upper decker. She was so excited.
