Monday’s d’Verse challenge is hosted by De Jackson here, aka WhimsyGizmo
Let your muse out of the jar, and scribble us a poem of precisely 44 words, not counting the title, and using some form of the word jar. Then head out into the blogosphere to visit some of the finest poets on the ’net. And don’t forget: the Quadrille door is ajar all week, and multiple poems are welcome!
You can join in here: https://dversepoets.com/2024/08/05/quadrille-205-a-jar-full-of-poems/
The Great Escape
I only found the jar later
Tipped over, it’s top lay asunder
How did it happen? I wondered
What strange intervention
Facilitated the great escape
Of a dozen cheerful crickets
They found the bathroom cupboard
Entirely to their liking
And formed a jolly choir
Just in case you aren’t familiar with the delightful sound of crickets, you can listen to this video. Crickets are nocturnal.
Once again, love the whimsey – and also how your poetry always sparks great visual imagery as well!

At least you know when they are there. My daughter has a gecko and has crickets. I can’t bring myself to pick them up lol.

My mom hates lizards so I do sympathise. Of course, I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like a cute little lizard. Mom is scared of them.

Don’t mind the lizard, it is more feeding live insects to it.

Yeah, that’s why I prefer ours to be outside feeding themselves.

Nicely done, Robbie! And I am WAY too familiar with their “delightful” sound every night, serenading me below my bedroom window.

😂, they drive you crazy

On the evenings it has been perfect outside, I can’t open my window to sleep. They make me absolutely crazy! (I don’t know why they didn’t bug me when camping… maybe there were less?)
LikeLike
I can’t imagine there are less when you’re camping. In saying that, I don’t notice them when we’re in the bush either, but I notice them in the house.

The closer to the house, the louder they are. Must be the reverb against the house 😉 It’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!!

You are welcome! I loved frogs when I was young and would pick them with bare hands. 😅

Me too. I also loved tadpoles and would catch them in a net and look at them. I always put them back though. My mom said that is why I got warts on my hands as a child, because I held frogs.

Wonderful poem, Roberta! Crickets are surely a choir, singing loud and clear at night.

Fascinating how many different poetic forms, approaches, etc., there are. You rose to the 44-word “jar” occasion, Robbie!

Hi Dave, I saw the word jar and this poem came. All I had to do was write it down. Most of my poetry is actually like this. It just comes, fully formed, into my head. It’s hard to explain and I don’t know how it is for other poets, but it sort of writes itself.

A delightful poem, Robbie–but I don’t find the sound of crickets at all delightful, especially when they’re in the house.

Your poem also made me smile Robbie, and reminded me of the childhood use of jam-jars as a collecting jar for nature…

Hi Andrew, yes, I also collected insects in jars. My preference was butterflies and not spiders or crickets.

Thank you, Dwight. My son liked insects. He put a rain spider in a jar once but he didn’t punch holes in the lid so the poor thing was already dead when I discovered it.

It was a fun poem. I usually hear crickets at night but I think that’s because the cicadas are drowning out their song during day and evening.

We have a few choirs in our garden. We have a large choir of very loud and raucous hadeda birds. Southern Africa is known for this noisy birds.
