Roberta Writes – Repost: In Touch With Nature – The difference between hyenas and wild dogs

My In Touch With Nature post this month discusses the differences between hyenas and wild dogs. They are two entirely different species of animals. Thanks for hosting, Kaye Lynne Booth.

I am travelling to Norway tonight, so I’ll only be able to attend to later comments after 2pm tomorrow. It is a long journey from South Africa with a flight change in Amsterdam. I won’t be around much until mid-next week.

  1. South Africa to Norway has to be a terribly long flight. Work-related or pleasure? I left a comment over at Kaye Lynne’s blog.

    1. Hi Pete, we got home late last night. Hubby was working. He was first in London and then in Norway. I joined him at the end of his Norway time and we had a few days in Oslo. We then went to Amsterdam and had a few days in that city. I went to see the art museums and it was fabulous.

  2. When I saw the title I thought apples ≠ oranges but the visuals made playing math (the only kind of math I do) more difficult. Snout =, long legs =, posture =. All other attributes hyena > wild dog. Now it’s math symbols and algebraic equations for writing. I have already posited the use of musical symbols for writing. There should be a contest to just use math or music symbols and as few author words as possible. Think about that in Norway! Norway >< South Africa? Quién es mas macho? Norway o South Africa?
FYI, thanks for the clarification. It's rare I even think about wild dogs, much less hyenas. And now I'm an expert! Except for all that centimeter and kilogram stuff…🤣

    1. HI Phil, thank you for your comment. Apologies for missing it. Picking up internet while travelling is intermittent. I started this series about Southern African wildlife because so many readers seemed very interested. When I posted about wild dogs last month, a lot of people commented that they were similar to hyenas which is a general misconception it seems. That is why I wrote this particular post. Norway is a long journey from SA. 11,5 hour flight to Amsterdam and then 1,5 hours to Norway with a layover in between. I left home at 7.15pm on Wednesday and arrived in Oslo at 2.15pm on Thursday. My husband is all go! go! go! so I hit the ground running in Oslo – grin!

        1. Hi Diana, we had our elections yesterday and the counting has started. If there is no change (which I very much doubt) we are going to make plans to immigrate at the end of 2025. Greg will have his honours and Michael will be finished school. I am pushing TC for Norway. I really loved it there.

          1. Wow, Robbie. Potential big changes. We’ve thought about leaving the US if the country chooses Trump. I’m glad you’re considering your options, and Norway has a reputation as a wonderful place to live.

  3. Have a safe trip, Robbie, and enjoy. I know you’ll have photographs to shar and look forward to seeing them. What an interesting post on the hyena/wild dog difference, loved the poem too — imagine the males waiting their turn, quite the reverse of many traditional societies! 😂
