Roberta Writes – Thursday Doors Writing Challenge: AI’s Killing the Movie Star #ThursdayDoors #poetry

Picture Caption: One of Teagan Geneviene’s fabulous picture compilations featuring a house, a girl walking towards the house, and an old-fashioned caravan. This picture is created by Teagan and no AI was used in its creation.

When I saw this collage of Teagan’s, it brought to mind a computer game my sons played years ago that featured old fashioned caravans. That thought led to how lovely Teagan’s collages are, so much more beautiful than what I’ve seen in the way of AI generated art. I also thought about the recent strikes in LA relating to the use of AI in the movie and animation industries. These thoughts all culminated in the song parody below.

Teagan has also written a few fantastic stories for the writing challenge. You can find her latest story here: https://teagansbooks.com/2024/05/15/whatnot-wednesday-tdwc-the-rabbit-hole/.

AI’s Killing the Movie Star

When I was pint-sized back in 1982

Watching animation was the best thing I could do

Moving, talking pictures so thrilling and new

Oh-a oh-a

Artificial intelligence has the industry in a stew

The work of many being replaced by just a few

Makes me wonder where our world is moving too

***

Oh-a oh-a

My sons both love it

Oh-a oh-a

Think it’s a great fit

***

AI’s killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

Machine generated images holds sway

Oh-a-a-a-oh

***

And now the youth sit glued to computer screens

Parents scratch their heads and wonder what it means

From the box comes gunfire and screams

***

Oh-a oh-a

The world is upside down

Oh-a oh-a

It makes me groan and frown

***

AI’s killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

It’s far too late to close that door

Impossible now to even the score

Oh-a-a-a-oh

Oh-a-a-a-oh

***
AI’s killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

It’s far too late to close that door

Impossible now to even the score

The kids sit playing and begging for more

Learning how to conduct virtual war

***

No more movie star

No more TV star

AI’s killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

AI’s killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

AI is killing the movie star

AI’s killing the TV star

This is my last song parody for Dan Antion’s Thursday Doors Writing Challenge. It is based on Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles which you can watch here:

  1. Excellent parody lyrics, Roberta. What’s amazing is that radio is still around. And even stranger, vinyl records have made a comeback. I think movie and TV stars will thrive for awhile, but they will have to work harder to stay on top of the game.

    1. Hi Timothy, I am glad you enjoyed this. Radio is still around and I sometimes listen to it. I listen to more radio than I watch TV or movies. I agree that TV and movies are still popular but I don’t think nearly as much with the younger generations (Z and Alpha). I wonder if they will survive in the medium to longer term.

      1. I haven’t watched TV in over 30 years. Rarely watch movies. I wouldn’t miss them. I used to listen to the radio in the car, but I don’t do listen to the radio any more, either.

  2. I agree with your thoughts Robbie. Children of today can never understand what was animation and how we had to borrow books from the library, browsed them for hours to prepare an assignment!

    1. Absolutely, Balroop. It is so much easier now although you do need to be careful of sources as some are fake. I can remember spending whole afternoons in the library doing research. Maybe this is why the older generations are so much better at research than the youngsters who now want to just use GBTChat to do a summary for them.

  3. Oh-a-a-a-oh I loved it!! Can AI really do it though? I want to remain skeptical, not ready to cross out the human element too fast that makes for that charisma that great movie stars have! Great write, Robbie, for a world that’s moving faster every day!

    1. Hi Dora, it is an interesting debate. My sons, nephews and nieces don’t watch TV or movies. They play computer games or x-box and talk to each other in the cloud. I don’t think they are interested in the same type of visual story as we are/were. It will be interesting to see what happens. Music is certainly changing. A lot of music stars become big on YT from their garages.

      1. My children being millennials, they seem to prefer a blend, but still a lot of media that’s (still) unfamiliar to me. I do notice in video games that voice actors seem to be gaining ground!

  4. The cat is definitely out of the bag. The artist’s hand, the actor’s idiosyncrasies, the inconsistencies, make a difference for me. Everything now looks the same, too perfect, bland. But that’s what the world wants these days–20-year-olds getting botoxed. Art and writing getting botoxed.
They introduced computer design into the textile industry in the 1980s–and now everything looks the same. But it’s flawless, and also cheaper to produce. (K)

    1. Yes, you are right, Kerfe. I think that AI generated art, clothing, etc. has its place as it is cheaper and easier to access. Human made art will just become even more expensive and exclusive in my opinion. Flaws and imperfections among other things, make human made art what it is – amazing and something that can’t be replicated.

      1. I think you are right, sadly. We are moving further and further from what connects us as people, and instead have become connected to and reliant upon machines. There’s no turning back.

          1. My girls are different than me as well, but they were also the last generation to know life without constant devices. And there’s a difference in the nine year gap. The older one still talks to her friends on the phone constantly, and sees them in person all the time. The younger one sees her friends less frequently, and texts. A device is no substitute for human contact.

  5. Very nice lyrics. I started thinking about a Science Fiction I’ve read by Arthur C. Clarke. It was a city of sleepers. People chose to immerse themselves in a virtual reality fantasy world rather than living in the real world, basically sleeping their life away. With AI and VR that could become a possibility.

  6. Such a fitting song to choose for AI replacing TV/movie stars. And you did a great job in your parody of updating the song to AI. Right now, AI feels like a huge wave crashing into the arts. Some people will use AI as a “do all the work for me” tool. But I hope some will keep making their own art. Since radio is still around, despite TV. And printed books are still around, despite ebooks.

    1. HI Dave, your comment is so interesting to me. You are in the creative world from a work perspective, while I am not. The artists I interact with all do their work by hand or using a computer but not using AI. AI art that I have seen can’t match human creations like this image of Teagan’s. There are strange errors in a lot of it and disconnects because of the way AI works. I don’t believe human created art will ever disappear. It will become more exclusive and expensive and AI may reign in the ‘penny dreadful’ space.

  7. Ha… Robbie, I can’t think of anyone with whom I’d rather be on the same wavelength, but it’s uncanny. I was just about to write a vignette about this image. Literally — I had picked a video (different song) and had the vignette in my head.

Anyhow thanks for using my image collage as a springboard for your inspiration. Hugs.

    1. Hi Teagan, when I look at your art works I see what humans can accomplish, which, when compared to AI, is so much more beautiful. That, and the recent strikes in LA relating to the use of AI in movie creation were the springboard thoughts for this parody.

  8. Fantastic, Robbie. I remember that song very well. Thankfully, the video didn’t manage to kill the radio star, and I hope AI don’t kill the TV or movie stars. Love Teagan’s image as well. Wonderful answer to the challenge. Congratulations!

    1. Hi Maureen, as I mentioned, Teagan’s art is the opposite to what I’ve experienced AI art to be. AI art tends to look a bit fake and disconnected in my experience. I stick with human made art. That being said, AI is becoming more common and there are some people using it effectively. Most book companies won’t accept AI produced illustrations for books in my experience. Not yet.

  9. This is so spot on and powerful, Robbie! I’m feeling older by the day when I see young children play on their smart phones, and I can’t help but wonder if a book is nearby for them to delight in. I feel like the world and technology isn’t moving in a direction that will benefit the younger generations. We’re not grandparents yet, and honestly, because of events in the world, we’re not eager for a new generation to enter this chaotic world. If it happens, of course, we’ll be thrilled. But for now, we’re more concerned about the well-being of our children. We just want our son and daughter to be happy, healthy, and safe. I’m not a fan of AI either. And Teagan’s images are always beautiful and so creative. 💜

  10. Terrific “Doors” take, Robbie! Teagan’s image, all her images are enchanting.

I remember this song, and how it rang true back when. Now, your lyrics sing true, again.

For some reason my mind jumped to these words I remember more or less from Shakespeare:

    Romeo slew Tybalt

    Tybalt, Mercutio.

Who now his precious blood doth owe?

Thanks for another fab “Doors” write!
