Last week was a busy one with two birthdays in my family and the 2020 DealMaker’s Awards.

On Monday I had my birthday. I worked the whole day until 7.30P.M. I received two lovely bouquets of flowers, one from my mother-in-law and one from my sister. They were both a lovely surprise as I rarely receive flowers. My green fingered mother took care of them for me and they lasted for a whole week. It was lovely having these cheerful arrangement in my office.

My oldest son, Gregory, turned 18 on Wednesday which was quite an overwhelming milestone age for me. He, of course, is thrilled to now be legal for most things and able to get his license to drive a car this year in preparation for his going to University next year.

My team at work was nominated for three awards at the 2020 DealMaker’s Awards which took place on Tuesday evening, 23 February. The event was hosted virtually and I went to collect the awards and do the photograph shoot for the newspaper on Friday morning.

Lastly, I received the paperback copies of A Ghost and His Gold which was very exciting.

All in, last week was very eventful and this week is seeming a little dull by comparison. I did manage to do a short reading from a Ghost and His Gold though.

    Print books are so exciting and I’m glad you got A Ghost and His Gold. For some reason the volume on my laptop is giving me grief right now and won’t turn on. Grrr! I’ll have to try again so I can hear you reading 🙂

    1. Hi Mae, thank you for your lovely comment. It is exciting to receive the paperback and I am hoping to get this book into a local chain as it is about South African history. I have issues with my laptop recently too – very frustrating when it happens.

          1. That is a very good question, Robbie. I’m so very glad that you asked as I had thought a great deal about closing the comments on #fridaypainting. All other ChasingART posts have comments open, except for my “Friday” post. My first thought was that I wanted to foster an inner conversation rather than a conversation, a time of reflection as we entered the weekend. The other thought was for me to look over the past #fridaypaining” posts and consider why I chose certain paintings. In other words, did I have an unconscious preference or bias. As I look back over the past few weeks, I notice that I chose portraits over landscapes. This coming week I will be posting on thoughts about portraits which will be open to discussion. I am grateful for the comments because it adds so much to my knowledge and experience. Sending many hugs your way.

          2. This is a good reason, Rebecca. I gravitate towards paintings in oil (I like the vibrancy) in bright colours (because I like bright colours) and that include people. At a minimum, they must include something relating to people i.e. a boat, a house or hut or something like that. I am not a fan of landscapes without a ‘people’ point of interest. I think its because I find people so interesting. I will look out for your post this week Friday.

          3. You are a storyteller, Robbie, and you love people. I envision you viewing a painting and then conjuring up a story. I found it interesting that I chose portraits over the past weeks. So much to consider when we look into a face that is unknown, yet known. I enjoy our conversations!!Hugs!!!

        1. Oh, I thought the kids were going back to school on the 8th of March and the lockdown was starting to be lifted. My UK colleagues were talking about going back to the office today. This is why I though it was more imminent. I honestly hope they don’t rush it so you get a third wave. We need to go forward now.

          1. You’re right, schools will be starting again on a partial basis from Monday, but the real lifting begins on the 29th. There are staggered dates for the reopening of non-essential retail, though the advice is, I think, still to work from home for those who can, until the restrictions are relaxed. It depends on the type of job, how much it can be done from home, and what the employer is like. I agree – we really don’t need another wave, and I hope that doesn’t happen.

    1. Hi Pete, thank you. He is hoping for Edinburgh but applications only open later this year. He would be applying for 2022 which is better as hopefully university will be more normal by then. He is also applying for two local universities and two others in the UK.

      1. A big milestone in both of your lives. I am reminded of a story when we moved our son into the dorms (7 hours away), and his mom was having a much harder time with the transition than he was. We got in the car to drive home, and my wife said, “Oh, go back and take a picture of him in his dorm room.” I knew he would not be receptive to this idea. She insisted, and so I had to think which one will be more upset about this. As expected, our son thought it was stupid and didn’t want his picture taken. The wife won out, and I took a picture of a surly eighteen-year-old. 😎 By the way, he’s a fabulous young man now. At age 28, we couldn’t be prouder of him. College was a great experience.
