I have finished A Ghost and His Gold in all is nearly 118 000 words of glory. I have re-read it several times and I have decided not to shorten it as everything is relevant in this tale of three ghosts, all of whom died during or soon after the Second Anglo Boer War in South Africa between Great Britain and the Orange Free State and the South Africa Republic. This war raged between 1899 and 1902 and changed the course of South African history.
My main objective with writing this book has been to delve into the physiology of what was almost a civil war at the time and how it impacted on all the people of South Africa, to the extent such historical information is recorded and available.
This book should be available on Amazon in January 2021.
Here is the blurb:
After Tom and Michelle Cleveland move into their recently built, modern townhouse, their housewarming party is disrupted when a drunken game with an Ouija board goes wrong and a sinister poltergeist, Estelle, who died in 1904, is summoned.
Estelle makes her presence known in a series of terrifying events, culminating in her attacking Tom in his sleep with a knife. But, Estelle isn’t alone. Who are the shadows lurking in the background? – one in an old-fashioned slouch hat and the other, a soldier, carrying a rifle. Discovering their house has been built on the site of one of the original farms in Irene, Michelle becomes convinced that the answer to her horrifying visions lies in the past. She must unravel the stories of the three phantoms’ lives, and the circumstances surrounding their untimely deaths during the Second Anglo Boer War, in order to understand how they are tied together and why they are trapped in the world of ghosts between life and death. As the reasons behind Estelle’s malevolent behaviour towards Tom unfold, Michelle’s marriage comes under severe pressure and both their lives are threatened.

Enjoy your weekend.

It must be a great feeling to have finished the book after all your hard work. Horror and the supernatural aren’t really my thing, but I know that they are popular with many and there is an audience awaiting you. I wish you lots of success with your new book, Robbie.

I believe there are ghosts and just because not all of us can see them does not mean they don’t exist. I will certainly buy a copy of the book, in the meantime, I will wait in anticipation.

Hi Esther, I hope you are doing well. I think you should have had your operation by now and are hopefully healing well.

Thanks Robbie. It’s been a bit of a tough time and I’m typing with one finger on the other hand for now! They’ve said it’s going to take some time to heal. I hope you’re well.

I have also had an unexpected health problem to deal with Esther and have been booked off work until the end of September. I am taking it easy reading, writing and blogging which are all fun and relaxing things for me. You must let your shoulder heal properly and do the physio therapy exercises. Shoulders are difficult when it comes to surgery. My mom and my aunt have both had surgeries.

Thank you, Dan. I wrote this book mainly for its historical elements and because I wanted to explore how this war led to the South Africa I was born into.

Thank you, Balroop. I know that supernatural is not for everyone but, linked with the historical angle, it is either supernatural or romance and I’ve yet to turn my writing hand to romance.

Congratulations on finishing the book, Robbie! It must feel great to get it off to your publisher. In reading the excerpts, I learned a new word: planchette. So that’s what the Ouiji board thingy is called!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I didn’t know what it was called either, LIz. I had to do a lot of research of Ouiji boards when I wrote this book. I wanted to include something different for me and this was it.

That research must have been quite interesting.

Yes, and it was relatively consistent which was nice. When I researched some of the backgrounds to ghosts for Through the Nethergate, the stories were inconsistent and I had to go with the most common view.

I know what you mean! Historical research is time-consuming enough without having to reconcile conflicting accounts. (But, of course, that’s the nature of history!)

Yes, it is the nature of history, especially older history.
