Roberta Writes welcomes C.S. Boyack and his amazing The Hat series of books

Today, I am delighted to welcome fantasy and sci-fi author, C.S. Boyack, to Roberta Writes with a post about his amazingly imaginative The Hat series of books. I have read and enjoyed several of Craig’s book, including the first two books in this series.

Take it away, Craig!

Thanks for having me back, Robbie. This is kind of exciting, because I’ve never been able to do a series tour before. Now that I have enough volumes, I thought I’d give it a try. The goal is to discuss one volume per week. Here on week three it’s all about The Ballad of Mrs. Molony.

The Hat Series involve short novels you can read in an afternoon. I’ve also worked to make sure readers can tackle them out of order. If you pick up any volume, I don’t think you’ll feel lost.

In The Ballad of Mrs. Molony, the duo are hunting vampires. I designed my vamps after predators. I’ll use an African example to make my point. Lions tend to hang out in plain sight. Various herbivores seem to wander past with no worries. It’s when the lions aren’t in sight that the prey species need to worry.

Most of my vampires hide among the street people. We notice them, but try not to look as we go out for an evening. In this story, I took them to another level. I placed them among the rodeo circuit. These events have a lot of parties going on, and someone is going to drink a bit too much, or wander off alone for a smoke.

I also worked on the concept that vampires were people before the big change. I made some less threatening, but the targets of this story were monsters before they became vampires.

Good thing Lizzie and the hat have a small cover band. This gets them into the right places to stalk the killers. They just have to adapt to a different kind of music than they usually play. I worked some of this for humor, because it’s a new style for them.

It’s actually a vampire that tells Lizzie all about the current problem. Kevin Mugford has to be the worst vamp of all time. He has gnarly teeth to the point of deformity, a speech impediment, and is pretty cowardly. He needs Lizzie, because the vampires have taken his sister to use as livestock. They feed off her on slow nights when hunting hasn’t been productive.

Since this series is supposed to be somewhat comical, the hat doesn’t trust him. It could be a setup to jump Lizzie as she’s about to move in on them. Maybe the sister is a vampire, too. It leads to a few fun interactions between Lizzie and the hat.

The Ballad of Mrs. Molony is free today, and will be for a couple of days. You can’t beat that deal. Check out a fun supernatural romp during October, on me.

Since this is a series tour, I’m including the link to the whole series. http://mybook.to/The-Hat-Series

Blurb

The Hat Series is my opportunity to have a little fun, and readers seem to be enjoying themselves, too. The series fits into a variety of pigeonholes as all stories do. If you’re looking for supernatural, paranormal, or urban fantasy, with a dose of dark humor, this might be the series you’re looking for.

Lizzie St. Laurent is a hard working twenty-something. She’s struggling with the issues of being a young adult, but also dealing with the supernatural world. After her grandmother died, she tried to get a memento from the estate. Her greedy uncle refused to share, so in desperation, she stole a box from the moving van.

Her treasure turned out to be an old hat that belonged to her grandfather. Not exactly the knickknack she was hoping for. This isn’t any ordinary hat. He’s actually a being from another dimension who was brought here by witchcraft. He has a few magical skills, but also some more ordinary ones. He can transport her to a cabin, deep in the forest, among other things. A bit more ordinary is his ability to play the upright bass, but only if he has a human host to manipulate. He’s also a shapeshifter, but is limited to always being a hat of some kind.

The hat has been in Lizzie’s family for centuries, and all of his partners have been monster hunters. Their symbiotic relationship also created an additional income stream for Lizzie. They formed a small cover band, which tends gets them out at night when monster hunting is more productive.

I put all kinds of strange things into these stories to make them fun. My section breaks have all been replaced with a series of bass clefs. I also include silly graphics in various locations to enhance the tales. You’ll find tons of snark mixed in with your blood and adventure.

These are short novels, designed for a single afternoon. While it is a series, they can be read as stand-alone tales. If one of the other volumes is your entry-point, I don’t think you’ll feel lost.

If this sounds like something to make your October complete, I’d appreciate you checking it out.

My reviews of books in this series

The Hat

The Hat by C.S. Boyack is such a great read. The main characters are a young girl, Lizzie St Laurent, a twenty-one-year-old college dropout whose grandmother has died and who has been left to fend for herself in a city far from home and the Hat. Lizzie is working a couple of jobs to pay the bills and keep a roof over her head. She also has a deal with the landlord whereby she keeps the garden tidy and trim in return for free utilities. Lizzie is struggling and when her uncle doesn’t want to give her a keepsake from her grandmother’s estate, she helps herself to one from the back of the removal van. Boy, does she make a good choice. She ends up acquiring a hat that can communicate with her, transform its shape, transfer her to a “safe house’ built by her grandfather and teach her how to play a musical instrument. What is even better is that the Hat is magically bound to Lizzie’s family and is there to assist her out of tight spots in life. When the baby of a friend of Lizzie’s is stolen, the Hat is right there by her side to help her rescue the babies form a band of ruthless kidnappers.

Along the way, Lizzie will have some fun experimenting with great fashion items and meeting some interesting musicians. The Hat is a fast-paced novella which will keep you turning the pages, giving you lots of laughs along the way.

I rated this book five stars out of five.

Viral Blues

Viral Blues is a thrilling and fun second book in The Hat series. Someone or something evil has contaminated all the vaccinations being administered in the USA, with the result that horrible epidemics are breaking out in towns throughout the continent. Gupta and Gina Greybill are determined to find out who is behind the outbreaks and why. The gather a group of unusual heroes together to help them figure it all out, including, Lizzie and her paranormal hat, Clovid and his dog, Justine, a voodoo practitioner, Jason Fogg who can shape-change into fog, and Lisa, a robot girl.

This unlikely crew quickly realise that something malevolent and sinister is afoot and it involves zombies, the mafia, and unscrupulous scientists. The group must set aside their differences and utilise their different strengths to overcome the evil force behind the scheme.

C.S. Boyack is an author of unusual originality and his fantastic heroes are highly entertaining. Each character has useful talents but also has a weakness which needs to be overcome in order for the group to keep making progress in solving the case. The author also threads some excellent humour throughout his novel which makes for an even more entertaining and enthralling read.

My review of The Yak Guy Project

This is my personal favourite of C.S. Boyack’s books.

I have read a few of Craig Boyack’s books and I really enjoy his writing. I found this story particularly enjoyable.

The nameless hero of the story wakes up in the middle of a desert with a bullet in his head and no memory of what happened to him and how he got there. He is rescued by a talking Yak who is there to help him learn to become a useful part of society. Our unusual hero has lived a life of laziness and has spent his days sponging off his friends and anyone else who comes along.

Our hero sets off on an usual journey in a post apocalyptic world where war has destroyed the sophisticated and technologically advanced societies that lived there previously. The hero meets a prototype, a human like creature that teaches him a lot about the art of survival such as identifying edible plants and other useful natural resources. The prototypes salvage food and other recyclable materials from the remains of the destroyed cities, villages, aeroplanes and vehicles that scatter the country side. The prototype also teaches the hero the importance of reflection and thinking about what you want from life and how your individual actions impact on the natural world.

When the hero reaches a point in his emotional development where he is ready to re-join his own kind, the Yak reappears and they set off together to find one or other of the survivals who have formed themselves into rival groups. The hero still has lessons to learn about love, loyalty and teamwork.

I really enjoyed the hero and found his personal journey from a selfish and spoilt man-child to a reliable and resourceful man very interesting. The story was fast paced and entertaining and I enjoyed the fantasy world that the writer created.

Mauser Model 93/95

Prior to the Second Anglo Boer War, Imperial Germany supplied the two Boer Republics with tens of thousands of modern Mauser rifles. The most common of these was the Mauser Model 93/95 chambered for the 7x57mm cartridge.

This is how Tactical Life Magazine describes the Mauser Model 93/95:

“Paul Mauser’s first smokeless-powder, bolt-action, charger-loaded, magazine-fed rifle featured a tubular receiver that held a one-piece both with dual front-locking lugs. The bolt was drilled out…

Roberta Writes – My YT reviews of Dead of Winter Journeys 6 & 7 and short readings

Dead of Winter by Teagan Riordain Geneviene

I am really enjoying Dead of Winter by Teagan Riordain Geneviene and Journey’s 6 and 7 are simply thrilling. Keep them coming, Teagan.

Journey 10, Pergesca is now available and you can read about it here: https://teagansbooks.com/2021/10/13/announcing-dead-of-winter-journey-10-pergesca/

Journey 6, The Fluting Fell

My review

Journey 6 opens with Haldis realising that Arawn has somehow overcome the binding and managed to cross over from the Realm of the Dead. The reality that is Arawn becomes clearer still as this journey progresses and he attempts to kidnap Boabhan. Fortunately, his attack is unsuccessful but Boabhan is left injured and weak. Boabhan is unable to put up a barrier to stop Emlyn from penetrating her dreams and Emlyn is subjected to a realistic reperformance of a traumatic event in Boabhan’s life.

The Deae Matres decide to seek shelter in an old and seemingly empty estate which was abandoned by its owner when her entire family died during the Fever Days. The estate proves to not be as abandoned as the party thought and Emlyn, with her gift of seeing spirits, meets a ghost who she is able to help and another who is able to help her with some vital information and an important indicator of the path the group must take.

Throughout this journey, Emlyn continues to learn from the Deae Matres and learn more about their pasts and experiences, many of which feed into their present circumstances and help determine the way forward.

As always there is rich language and beautiful descriptions like “A dream latched onto her and pulled her into a deep sleep.”

This journey ends on quite a cliff hanger which certainly left me eager to move onto Journey 7.

Journey 7, Revenant Pass

Dead of Winter: Journey 7, Revenant Pass

My review

Oh my, this journey starts with such a bang. Haldis remembers how she came to be all alone, bound to a beautiful and magical, but excruciatingly lonely, building. The flaws that marred the society of the Deae Matres come out and we see various characters presented as they were at the height of their power. No structure administered by human being can ever be perfect, but the society does manage to save that which is most important to them, even if the outcome isn’t exactly as hoped and expected.

Arawn’s status as a nightwalker becomes clearer and his intentions towards the Deae Matres is revealed.

Through the world of Dreams Emlyn enters a different part of the Realm of the Dead and discovers who the young man with the silver hair is. She learns a bit of his backstory and motivations. His limitations are clearly stated, but he does offer to try and help Emlyn and the other travelers out of their difficult situation trapped in the World of the Dead. He is not able to guarantee success and Emlyn is sent back to her friends with a message for them to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

A little more is revealed about Boabhan’s strengths and weakness as well as Emlyn’s own concerns for her future. As circumstances and situations unravel, Emlyn continues to learn who she can count on the most within the group.

This is one of the most exciting journeys in the series to date, and the story moves along at a rapid rate.

Roberta Writes – Divine Comedy, Inferno: Canto 7

Plutus, referred to as the “God of Wealth”, formerly worshipped y the Greeks and Romans, tries to stop the poets from entering the fourth circle, but Dante chastises him and Plutus collapses, falling to the ground.

Circle 4 is the circle for Wasters and Hoarders who spend the afterlife rolling enormous weights at one other, using only their chests. The two sectors of souls shout at each other: :”Why do you hoard?” shout the Wasters and “Why do you waste?” shout the Hoarders. After each clash, the souls hurry their weights back again, and then repeat their same actions while continuing to scream at each other.

Virgil hustles Dante on and they cross to another bank and discover a fountain which flows down though a crack in the rock. At the bottom of the stream the pair discover a marsh called Styx where souls are immersed in the mud, striking out at each other with their hands, feet and head and also biting each other. These are souls who have been destroyed by anger and sullenness. They now spend their lives in the mud, choking on it as they did on their own malevolent hatred during their lives, as a punishment for wasting the sunlight and wallowing in ‘mud’ when they were alive.

An extract from Canto 7:

“Said the good Teacher: “Son, thou seest now

the souls of those whom anger overcame;

nay, more, I ’d have thee certainly believe

that ’neath the water there are folk who sigh,

and make this water bubble at its surface,

as, wheresoe’er it turn, thine eye reveals.

Stuck in the slime, they say: “Sullen we were

in the sweet air that ’s gladdened by the sun,

bearing within us fumes of surliness;

we now are sullen in the swamp’s black mire.””

Appendix to Bad Moon Rising featuring Teri Polen

A header picture I borrowed from Teri Polen’s most recent BMR post here: https://teripolen.com/2021/10/11/badmoonrising-ailuros-by-matt-doyle-horror-lgbtq-scifi/

Every October, Teri Polen generously hosts Bad Moon Rising, a series of daily posts featuring horror, sci-fi, and paranormal books from the Indie author community. Teri never includes her own wonderful books in this series and so this year I invited Teri over to Roberta Writes for an Appendix to Bad Moon Rising post featuring her horror novel, Sarah.

Introducing Teri Polen

Thanks so much for hosting me today, Robbie!  For those of you not familiar with my blog, throughout the month of October I host Bad Moon Rising, which features a horror, paranormal, supernatural, or thriller indie author daily.  Each author completes a short interview with both fun and writing-related questions and chooses one of their books to highlight.  When Robbie asked if I’d like to answer my own BMR interview questions, I jumped at the chance—especially since my first book, Sarah, is FREE TODAY ONLY on Amazon!

Sarah is a young adult horror story, but there are also plenty of comedic moments.  Two of my friends are very much not horror fans, books or movies, but out of loyalty both read it and survived just fine.  Strangly enough, the story was inspired by my black cat, Shadow.  We’d just moved into a new house where no one had ever lived, and Shadow would sit at the bottom of the stairs, fur bristling, staring and growling at something we couldn’t see.  It got the wheels turning and made me wonder how a house could be haunted if there were no previous occupants.  And the story was born from that little nugget.  I mentioned Shadow in the acknowledgements and also wrote a black cat, Eby (short for Ebony), into the story.  He deserved the credit.

Even if you’re not a horror fan, I hope you’ll take a chance on Sarah and download it for FREE today!

I must add that I have read Sarah and loved it!

What’s your favorite season of American Horror Story?

That’s a difficult question to answer.  The first season, Murder House, was a favorite for a couple reasons—I’m a Dylan McDermott fan, and I was stupid excited a show like that was finally on TV.  I was skeptical about the addition of Lady Gaga in season five, Hotel, but she did an outstanding job.  I adored season eight, Apocalypse, because it brought the witches back into the mix, and Cody Fern gave a mesmerizing performance as Michael Langdon, the antichrist.

If you watch horror movies, are you the person who yells at the characters, covers your eyes, or falls asleep?

I’m definitely the person who yells at the characters over their idiotic actions.  Of course it’s a good idea to check out the basement/attic/outside by yourself.  Then I usually start laughing and cheering for the villain because the naïve characters got what was coming to them.  I’m aware I have a dark, twisty sense of humor that not everyone appreciates.

Do you ever see figures in your peripheral vision?

Yes.  Sometimes they’re real.  For years (and as recently as last month), hubby or my sons tried to scare me by jumping out of the closet, from behind furniture, etc., but it never worked.  I’m not a nervous type of person.  Sometimes I see things in my peripheral vision that aren’t my hubby or sons.  Who knows what they might be?

If you decided to write a spinoff of a side character, who would you choose?

I didn’t even need to think about this one.  It would be Finn, the best friend of my main character, Cain, in Sarah.  He’s blatantly honest, eternally loyal, and has a soft spot for Cain’s little sister, Maddie.  I also never knew what would come out of his mouth.  He was snarky from the beginning and gave me plenty of laughs.

What do you do to get inside your characters’ heads?

Sometimes my characters are pretty forthcoming about who they are and how their minds work.  When they’re stubborn, I use a technique I learned at a writer’s retreat.  I interview them.  It’s surprising what they’ll reveal.

What are you working on now?

I just turned in the sequel to my third book, Subject A36, a young adult sci-fi/dystopia.  It’s releasing later than I’d like (May 2022), especially for a sequel, but writing during the pandemic was a struggle for me.  I wanted to make sure these characters were able to tell their story.  I’ve had another story floating around in my head for the past two years, a YA supernatural/horror, so I’m working on that right now.

Thank you, Teri, for joining in this Appendix to Bad Moon Rising, I really enjoyed your responses to the questions.

My review of Sarah

I listened to the audio book of Sarah by Teri Polen. I thought the reader did a good job and narrated the story at a good pace and with sufficient expression and interest factor to keep the listener engaged.

I thought this book was really creepy. It is a YA book and the characters are all older teenagers which I think worked well for this plot as teenagers, particularly males, do not see risk and are likely to react to situations with a lot more bravado than an adult would in the same circumstances. The almost underhanded and devious way the ghost of Sarah, a murdered school girl, introduces herself to Cain, a jock with a kind heart, lets you know in a subtle way right up front that this is not a particularly friendly ghost and that there is more to her than initially meets the eye.

Cain has assumed the role of man of the house after the death of his father and is protective of his Mother and much younger sister. His compassion, youth and naivety does not stand him good stead in identifying the potential threat posed by Sarah although, as he finds out more about her death, he gradually realises that she is after retribution against her killers and is not looking for help to move on from her current status.

The author’s descriptions of Sarah as she becomes more and more evil and travels further down the path of revenge are very vivid and disturbing. Sarah’s evil thoughts and deeds are reflected in her ghostly face and form.

Fortunately for Cain, he has good friends on his side in the form of Finn, an intelligent and clear minded childhood friend, and Lindsey, a lovely young lady with an aunt who deals in the occult and is able to provide talismans and assistance in fighting Sarah as she becomes more deranged and angry. The clairvoyant aunt was a bit convenient but I did not detract from the story for me.

Roberta Writes – Divine Comedy: Inferno, Canto 6

My blogging friend Rebecca Budd is currently participating in a #KaramazovReadalong, you can read about it here: https://ontheroadbookclub.com/2021/07/27/karamazovreadalong-day-1-who-is-fyodor/.

The reading group are reading one chapter a day of this book and it inspired me to tackle Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri in the same manner.

Canto 6 has Dante and Virgil passing into the third circle of Hell which is guarded by Cerberus. In Greek mythology, Cerberus is referred to as the hound of Hades and is depicted as a multi-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld so that the spirits cannot escape. As the third circle is inhabited by gluttons, Cerberus with his multiple mouths and endless hunger is a suitable guardian.

The naked spirits lie on the ground rolling in the mud like pigs which a stinking slush falls from the sky. Cerberus stands over the howling spirits and barks furiously at them, clawing and biting those within his reach.

Cerberus requires a concession for each of his mouths to allow passersby passage through the third circle. Virgil satisfies this requirement by throwing the revolting slimy mud into his mouth.

As Dante and Virgil cross the swamp, one of the gluttons sits up and speaks to Dante. The spirit is Ciacco, the Hog, who claims to be from Florence and to know Dante. Dante is sympathetic to Ciacco’s fate and, knowing that the Damned can foresee the future, asks him why Florence is so divided and what the city’s fate is. Ciacco makes a prediction about a future war and defeat with one party being expelled. Dante asks about the location of certain famous Florentines and Ciacco tells him they are deeper in Hell.

Virgil tells Dante that Ciacco and the other gluttons will remain where they are until the Last Judgement afterwhich they will feel more pain as well as more pleasure having moved a little closer to perfection.

Here is an extract from Canto 6:

“Cerberus, cruel monster, fierce and strange,
Through his wide threefold throat barks as a dog
Over the multitude immers’d beneath.
His eyes glare crimson, black his unctuous beard,
His belly large, and claw’d the hands, with which
He tears the spirits, flays them, and their limbs
Piecemeal disparts.  Howling there spread, as curs,
Under the rainy deluge, with one side
The other screening, oft they roll them round,
A wretched, godless crew.  When that great worm
Descried us, savage Cerberus, he op’d
His jaws, and the fangs show’d us; not a limb
Of him but trembled.”

What Amazon says

Why? Is a story set in a web of despair, sex, unreachable emotion and love. One man’s crippling injuries, caused by an unprovoked, vicious attack, ruins the lives of everyone around him. This includes Terry Meadows, a nineteen-year-old boy who falls in love with the main character’s daughter Laura, twenty-seven years before the opening of the story. The twisted, interconnecting matrix in which Francis, Laura’s father, lives, destroys and distorts his daughter’s image of life beyond repair. It is a sad tragedy with an unexpected ending.

My review

Why is a most unusual romance between 19-year old Teri and Laura, the young and beautiful daughter of a crippled and vicious gangster. While out on the prowl one evening, Teri picks up an older woman of colour who invites him home for an evening of uncomplicated sex. Sammy is exotic and provocative, and Teri can’t resist. The evening doesn’t turn out as planned when Sammy’s daughter, Laura, and husband, Francis, turn out to be unexpectedly at home.

Teri is lucky to only be ‘carefully’ beaten by Francis’ henchman, Gary. After the two criminals depart, Teri is left with Laura who tells him how her father came to be crippled before she was born, and the details of the twisted sexual games he plays with his wife and her various lovers. Fascinated by Laura and attracted by the life of luxury Francis waves under his nose, Teri starts working for Francis.

Francis is a deeply disturbed and mentally twisted man who take a perverse pleasure in tormenting his already emotionally damaged wife. He is filled with rage and anger at everyone and the world in general, and deliberately tries to play with the minds and emotions of everyone he engages with. Sadly, Francis doesn’t exhibit a single redeeming feature and it is impossible for the reader to pity him, despite his terrible disability.

Laura is disturbed sole. She has a huge heart and lovely personality which is what draws Teri to her. The mental abuse she has experienced her whole life due to her father’s inhuman behaviour and her mother’s bizarre sexual activities are a huge burden on her shoulders. Laura is a victim and her story is compelling. It is impossible not to root for Laura and hope that she is able to conquer her past and many psychological traumas.

Teri is young and misguided at the beginning of this story. He is easily influenced by promises of sex and money and has little conscience about going after both. His character experiences the most growth in this story as he goes from an impetuous and naive youngster to a man who wants to change his life’s path and give his children a better future.

Why is an excellent and complex story which exposes the hypocrisy, debauchery, and corruption that plagues the lifestyles of the world’s most wealthy and influential people.
