In the beginning
Patrick Brontë, born Brunty, was the oldest of ten children born to Hugh Brunty, a farm labourer, and Alice McClory. He grew up in the small village of Drumballyroney in Country Down, Northern Ireland. At the age of twelve, Patrick was apprenticed to a blacksmith, and the to a linen draper and a weaver until he became a teacher in 1798. In 1802, he was given an opportunity to study theology at St John’s College, Cambridge, from where he received his degree in 1806. Fascinating post, Robbie! SO much talent in that memorable family, too many of whom died too soon.

Patrick was a strange man. He didn’t feed his children a good diet which contributed towards their poor health in later life.

Didn’t know that, Robbie. A real shame. 😦

I visited Haworth Parsonage a long time ago. I didn’t know about Patrick, though. He did amazingly well from his humble beginnings.
While I like Jane Eyre, I also love Wuthering Heights, and only recently read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall recently.
Such a pity they all died so young.

Hi Viv, yes, their early deaths were tragic. The average life expectancy in Haworth at that time was 21 years old. Pretty scary.
