Roberta Writes – Merry Christmas and Thursday Doors #gingerbread #Christmas #Thursdaydoors

Other than my Dark Origins post in collaboration with Writing to be Read later this month, this is my last post for 2023.

Having started 2023 with my husband in hospital with a venous sinus thrombosis and ending it with both my sons undergoing major 4-hour surgeries, I feel I need a break. I will be back on 8 January 2024. I thank all of you, my blogging family, for all you support, reads and comments during the course of this year.

For this last Thursday Doors post of the year, I am sharing the gingerbread and chocolate house display I created during Covid. Some of you have seen it before, but it is very cheering and worth re-sharing. PS, its a South African Christmas display so you won’t see any snow or ice. My little joke: These are the houses that Robbie built.

Milk chocolate house with an autumn fairy (this fairy was dedicated to Miriam Hurdle’s granddaughter, Autumn). I interviewed Miriam this week about her lovely children’s book, Tina lost in a crowd. If you missed it, you can read the interview here: https://writingtoberead.com/2023/12/13/growing-bookworms-guest-post-with-childrens-author-poet-and-memoirist-miriam-hurdle-growingbookworms-childrensfiction-readingcommunity/

  1. I was on a cruise around the Baltic and Norway and one morning when I went for breakfast, the kitchen chefs had made this wonderful display of gingerbread houses in a village setting. I don’t think I still have them but I will look. Your houses would not have looked out of place. A very Merry Christmas to you and all your family, Robbie, and may 2024 be a better year for health issues.

Holidays filled with delicious food, traditions, and stimulating conversations. And fun holiday movies, if you’re into those 🙂

    1. Hi Dan, yes, I am off work from today until 8 January. It is the summer holiday period now in South Africa. I must admit the end was hard. I had a document going into the stock exchange yesterday and it was a real push to get everything done in time.

  7. Wonderful photos, Robbie.
I know I’m hit or miss online these days, and as a result, I have missed a lot. I knew about your husband, but not about your sons. I hope and pray that everyone is on the mend. You definitely deserve a break. I will lift up prayers for health and blessings for all of you. I wish you a very Merry Christmas. ❤️

    1. Hi Mae, I didn’t write much about the operation in advance. A few of my poems hinted at surgery ahead but I didn’t actually write about it. The pre-operative period was a very anxious time for me, with all my memories of past operative disasters. So far, though, so good. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, Mae. It is always lovely to see you.

  8. I’m so glad your last post of the year is a doors post with your wonderful fondants. Here’s to good health in the New Year. I hope the boys’ surgeries were successful. Enjoy your break and Merry Christmas, Robbie.

  9. Jeez! Four hour surgeries? I’ll light a candle for all of them. That’s way too much doctoring for one household, especially over Christmas. Safe and sound and above the ground by the first of the year.

  10. Robbie (and all of yours), Merry Christmas , and Happy New Year!
Sounds like you will have a terrific rest, and some wonderful times over the holidays.
I adore your sweet village! Will people eat it over the holidays?

My Holiday post will go up today. Like you, last for the year.
However, I’ll be around visiting blogs and catching up.
Crazy, but only 11 days left this year.
I hope you have a less hospital year next year!
I look forward to your creative output next year!
    All my best,

    1. Hi Resa, I’m delighted you enjoyed this village. It was great fun to make. My cake art is always eaten and enjoyed. It is intended to be temporary in nature. I am already feeling much better. Those double operations and the aftercare really exhausted me. Wishing you a lovely Christmas and all the very best for 2024.

  11. Horsefeathers, I’m late again. I could have sworn I’ve checked your blog since the 15th… Each of these is marvelous on its own, Robbie. The combined display is absolutely amazing. So much detailed work! I got a kick out of the swimming fairies.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, and good health and happiness in 2024. Big hugs.
