During our recent trip to St Lucia in South Africa, we saw a lot of vervet monkeys. These little creatures are so cute with their wizened faces and tiny fingers, but they are very naughty and can be a pest.
On our first morning in town, the weather was lovely, and the vervet monkeys were having a smashing time raiding the dustbins and rushing through dining areas, grabbing an item, and making a fast get away. I never even saw the one that stole a yogurt off our table. I just saw the mummy monkey sitting on the wall, sharing it with her baby (it was very sweet).

Vervet monkeys in St Lucia town:
Tanka Tuesday
This week, Colleen’s prompt is the following photograph:

I couldn’t think of anything to write for this picture. It is very beautiful but that didn’t seem exciting enough for a poem. Eventually, I wrote this rather snarky shadorma.
Pastoral ambivalence
Not for me
Domesticity
Pastoral
Gentle scenes
Untamed African wildlife
Rooted in my soul
I’m ending off with a splendid and vivid African sunset. PS I was rather pleased with myself when I captured this shot.

That is a fabulous photo shot. Those monkeys are very naughty!

Hi Darlene, the monkeys are adorable, unlike baboons, but very naughty and excellent thieves.

We met some in the Caribbean who would steal things, like your watch, glasses or other jewellery. Cute as can be but naughty.

Yes, the locals do get annoyed. I’d better never live there as I would end up with a pet troop of vervets and angry neighbours.

Robbie, that sunset photo should be framed. I love it. Are you telling me you wouldn’t love to spend some time lounging in the shade during the heat of summer? No one seems to like this pastoral scene. LOL!

Oh, I did like it but our summers just aren’t like that. They are hot, harsh and wild. Nothing is gentle here in Africa.

Oh yes, your summers are like the desert in Arizona. Hot and harsh. The heat was too much for me. I love your photos, Robbie. That sunset is so good!

I love the monkeys! But I’m sorry that the beauty of John Constable’s painting didn’t inspire you to write an ode 😊

😂, thanks Clive. Our climate is so violent and harsh, I just can’t relate to this scene.

English pastoral beauty at its best. I live in Essex, where Constable did a lot of his work, and have visited several of the locations he painted. Some of them haven’t changed much!

Yes, I recognised the artist and his peaceful work. England is very beautiful.

I grew up being introduced to his paintings, it’s a kind of tradition here that we all know them. He didn’t paint the less beautiful parts, though 😉

Thanks for sharing these very funny and impressive photos, Robbie! From every written word one can see your very great love for South Africa. You are on the right place. Last year I thought to hear a kind of homesickness to rainy UK. Best wishes, Michael

Hi Michael, I do love South Africa but there are a lot of issues facing the country including a partial collapse of the only power utility. It makes everyday life a struggle. I go to the bush to remember what I love and recharge. Hugs

Robbie, that sunset picture is beautiful!
Haha, did you notice the tourism sign in St Lucia? “Hippo & Croc Boat Cruises … Snorkeling Tours.” Nope! Not me!

Hi Vera, we went on the hippo and croc tour. Fantastic. The snorkelling is not in this part of the estuary but I don’t snorkel (or swim).

Grinning from ear to ear reading about the monkeys! Your photographs (especially the sunset) are splendid. The painting we are to write about this week reminds me of my grandfather’s property in Quebec, Cda. Was there once and bored to sobs.

Hi Annette, you comment gave me such a giggle. Colleen must thing we are an irreverent bunch. The monkeys are adorable.

Naughty monkeys would be fun to watch, as long as I kept my own goods in hand. That sunset photo is magnificent.

Thanks, Tim. Indeed, you have to watch your stuff. I’m bad at that because I’m always watching the creatures 😂

My daughter took a trip to a primitive resort in Puerto Rico, and the thieving monkeys were terrible. In addition to snatching people’s food off their plates, they stole BSOs as well (Bright Shiny Objects). You outdid yourself with your sunset photo!

Hi Liz, I was pleased with this picture. Yes, they do become a nuisance but they are so sweet. If we lived there I would have my own pet troop.

My daughter did get a kick out of the monkeys. She just safeguarded her food and her belongings. 🙂

And the monkeys–I could find many interesting doors around here, but there not be any monkeys around. 🙂

Hi Merril, I was very pleased with that shot. We have no monkeys around our house either. We do have lots of birds and we had a hyena in the local park once.

Hi Christy. Vervet monkeys are native to Africa. They are a bit of a nuisance to people but I think they are cute. I imagine if I lived in St Lucia, I would have a bunch of pet vervets.

Hi Wayne, I have a few pictures that include hippos. This shot was from the back of the boat and aimed at catching the sunset red on the waves. No sunset pictures with birds sadly. Our water birds are nowhere to be seen at sunset 😊

The vervet monkeys are so cute, Robbie. Monkeys are very quick. I watched some documentary of the monkeys in India. They haave their own social system. Your sunset looks like a painting. I particularly love the waves. 🙂

That last shot is amazing. You almost need a distant fire somewhere to get those colors.

Hi Craig, no, in KwaZulu-Natal those are the natural sunset colours. It is very spectacular. Not a fire in sight. In fact, it poured with rain the next day, all day.

Ha ha, not a hippo in sight in that pastoral painting!
I love your Thursday doors Robbie as we always go somewhere interesting. Those monkeys are so cute, but I guess the novelty might wear off and one would long for breakfast in peace.

Hi Janet, indeed, the locals do find them a nuisance. The owner of the lodge where we stayed was also a big animal lover so she would never hurt them, but she does chase them away because they cause damage and chaos.

Wow! That is a beautiful sunset, Robbie. Those vervet monkeys are cute but they must be such a nuisance when they steal food from tables. We have some ibises here (lovingly, or not so lovingly, called ‘bin chickens’) which constantly roam in hope of food.

Hi Norah, they are a nuisance to the locals. That sunset shot was taken from the back of the boat to catch the red ripples. I love wakes.

You should be happy about that sunset photo. It’s gorgeous and awesome. The tanka is a bit sad to me as I’m in a city life and while I don’t mind it, I’d prefer a country life with occasional forays into modern life.
